Our origins date back to 1958 when Dr. Francesco Siccardi Sr. founded Bieffe Biochimici in Florence, Italy. Featuring state-of-the-art technology complemented by the creation of significant intellectual property, the company built a world-renowned reputation and was eventually acquired by U.S. based Baxter International.
Following his desire to improve care for patients and considering his personal experience with orthopaedic procedures, Dr. Alberto Siccardi dedicated himself to the development of orthopaedic techniques and prostheses. His passion led to the innovation and medical education platforms that have come to define Medacta today.
1999: Our story begins!
Medacta International was founded. Innovation was then, and remains today, the foundation of our present and future success.
2000: We start to grow
We acquired BIOMICRON in France and ORDEV in the Netherlands (and the related products) and we established our plant – and headquarters – in Castel San Pietro (Switzerland).
Thanks to our in-house production, in the same year we developed our first route card: the Cone, the first product made by Medacta, was produced.
2001: Welcome R&D
Our Research and Development department was born. Since 2001 our R&D has been innovating, optimizing and perfecting our range of products and solutions. Moreover, it supervises our production processes and ensures the high level of quality of our products.
2002: Cinétique and MNS
We developed the Cinétique, the first knee implant entirely designed by our Research and Development. In the following years, our offering for knee products and services has expanded more and more.
Moreover, we designed the MNS - Medacta Navigation System to put in surgeons’ hands state-of-the-art technology in total knee replacement and provide them with flexibility, accuracy and reliability. This new technology marked our first step into computer assisted surgery.
2003: Welcome VersafitCUP DM & QUADRA
In September we organized our 1st M.O.R.E. Symposium in Lugano (Switzerland), the first of many M.O.R.E. congresses on orthopaedics organized by Medacta.
Moreover, the first VersafitCUP DM and QUADRA System surgical procedures were carried out.
2004: AMIS & M.O.R.E.
The first AMIS (Anterior Minimally Invasive Surgery) surgical procedure was carried out. This innovative, minimally invasive technique promotes patient well-being and exemplifies our belief that innovation always requires education: in the same year we founded the M.O.R.E. (Medacta Orthopaedic Research and Education) Institute and the first AMIS learning center was held.
2005: Medacta loves MIS
2005 is the year of the 2nd M.O.R.E. Symposium, which was held in Villa Erba in Cernobbio, near Como (Italy). The focus of the congress was minimally invasive surgery in total hip arthroplasty. In this context, Medacta’s AMIS (Anterior Minimally Invasive Surgery) proves to be a logical approach for MIS surgery.
2006: Cinétique MIS
We launched the Cinétique MIS, our first minimally invasive technique for total knee replacement. Yes, we are proud supporters of MIS!
2007: Medacta Australia and first GMK Primary
We established Medacta Australia, the first Medacta subsidiary outside Europe.
Moreover, the first GMK Primary surgical procedure was carried out.
2008: Medacta USA
We received the first FDA product clearance and implanted the first prosthesis in the USA. A new and exciting adventure had just begun!
We also organized our 3rd M.O.R.E. Symposium in Nice (France).
2009: Always on the move
We decided to enter the spine market: Medacta spine division was created.
In the same year we organized the 4th M.O.R.E. Symposium in Zurich (Switzerland).
Moreover, the first MyKnee surgical procedure was carried out. This set of 3D printed patient-specific guides allows accurate and reproducible implant placement based on a pre-operative 3D plan. It was the beginning of our personalized solutions.
2010: Hello Spine
One year after the creation of our spine division, our first spine product was implanted: MectaLIF. We also developed the TiPEEK (Titanium Coated PEEK) technology for spine surgeries.
Our event IKR – Innovation in Knee Replacement (5th M.O.R.E. Symposium) was held in Geneva, Switzerland.
2011: Medacta Japan and much M.O.R.E.
We entered the Asian market by establishing Medacta Japan.
We established our Medacta for Life foundation to support projects for health, development and childhood worldwide and we opened the MyBaby company nursery school with the aim of promoting the return of women to professional life after motherhood.
In the same year, the first GMK Sphere surgical procedure was carried out. We organized the 6th M.O.R.E. International Symposium in Stresa (Italy).
2012: A lot of news
Our first pedicle screw was implanted: M.U.S.T., a versatile and comprehensive pedicle screw system designed to provide flexibility to the surgeon. Besides that, we organized our 100th learning center AMIS, the first GMK revision system procedure was carried out and we launched the MyPractice Development Plan, a unique and special package of services to support surgeons in promoting their activities and training patients through a series of customizable marketing tools.
2013: Efficiency and personalized solutions
Three important surgical procedures were carried out for the first time: GMK Efficiency, a complete single use instrument solution used to implant the GMK Primary or GMK Sphere; MySpine, a patient specific pedicle screw placement guide that allows the surgeon to determine his pre-operative 3d planning based on CT images of the patient’s spine; MyHip, an advanced system specifically designed to assist the surgeon with implant selection and positioning.
2014: 15 years of success celebrated with a great event and a great award
We organized the 7th M.O.R.E. International Symposium in Lugano (Switzerland). During this two-day event, more than 700 surgeon attendees heard from a faculty of experts on topics including surgical best practices, emerging clinical data, and planned enhancements for Medacta knee, hip, and spine surgery products. Moreover, MySpine was awarded as the best new technology for spine care in 2014 on the basis of its originality, clinical relevance and likelihood of improving patient outcome.
2015: M.O.R.E. & M.O.R.E.
We celebrated our 200th AMIS Learning Center and our first Asian learning center in Singapore. Moreover, we successfully organized our first national congress in Japan, the 1st M.O.R.E. Japanese Symposium.
2016: New event, new products and new plant
Our 8th M.O.R.E. International Symposium, which was held in Lugano, brought together more than 1,200 surgeons from 30 countries worldwide, with a high-level scientific program. This program focused on maximizing patient satisfaction by adopting both patient specific solutions and optimized care pathways.
After the success of the first intervention in Bern (Switzerland) in December 2016, we officially launched the innovative Medacta Shoulder System. Moreover, we started a new and exciting adventure by creating the sports medicine division.
In the same year we opened the doors of our new plant for the spine division – including manufacturing and R&D – in Rancate (Switzerland), not far from our headquarters in Castel San Pietro.
2017: New challenges
We acquired Vivamed in the Austrian market and Medacare in the German market, consolidating our presence in Europe. Moreover, we organized our second national congress in Japan, the 2nd M.O.R.E. Japanese Symposium.
2018: Next generation era
In October, Francesco Siccardi was appointed next Chief Executive Officer of Medacta. Our Founder, Dr. Alberto Siccardi, remained President of the company’s Board of Directors.
“Medacta’s continued growth and prosperity make this an opportune time to transition to the next generation of the company’s leadership. With a deep understanding of both the technical and commercial sides of our business, Francesco is the right person to lead Medacta into the next phase of its evolution.” said Dr. Alberto Siccardi.
2019: Happy 20th anniversary!
2019 marks our 20th anniversary and we celebrated it during our 9th M.O.R.E. International Symposium, which was held in April in Lugano (Switzerland). From minimally invasive surgery to personalized medicine and beyond is a motto that efficiently summarizes these two decades of activity. Indeed, our innovation began with minimally invasive techniques and has evolved into personalized solutions for every patient.
